The West Penn Trail is a 17-mile multi-use trail, maintained entirely by some great volunteers. It spans from near Blairsville, PA to the historic town of Saltsburg. CVC and the West Penn Trail Council work to raise the necessary funds to acquire land for expansion and to keep the trail open year after year. Plans are underway to extend the trail to Avonmore, and eventually Apollo, creating approximately 40 miles of continuous trail through the valley.

The West Penn Trail

From the tragedy that started Conemaugh Health System, our history continues to grow. Our story is about the patients and families who trusted their lives and futures to our staff. Our history is grateful patients, families, volunteers, and employees who support the community and trust that their health is in good hands.

Sadly, in years past, many of these defining natural features were decimated by decades of coal mining and industrial practices that paid little regard to the environmental consequences. The Kiski-Conemaugh River Valley was in desperate need of care. Within the hour, a body of water which engineers at the time estimated moved into the valley with the force of Niagara Falls, rolled into Johnstown with 14 miles of accumulated debris, which included houses, barns, animals and people, dead and alive. The 1889 Johnstown Flood fatalities reached a total of 2,209.

What is CVC?

TheUpper Basin Projects are all about making valuable connections throughout the Johnstown area. CVC is working with partners to design, develop, and expand trails; all while our sister organization, the Stonycreek/Quemahoning Initative continues development of Whitewater Park, a 300-yard river park for kayaking & tubing. After a two-year hiatus, the Stony-Kiski-Conemaugh river sojourn returned with strong participation. A four-day adventure goes from Johnstown to Apollo through deep river gorges and beautiful ravines. Focuses on monitoring local streams and rivers, providing labor and support for local watershed groups.

We are also working toward connections with the Hoodlebug and Ghostown Trails to our east. The next West Penn Trail Triathlon is set for October 14, 2023. In this adventure race, you’ll kayak, bike, and run your way over river and trail in beautiful, Historic Saltsburg. Just 14 miles above the city, the South Fork dam held back Lake Conemaugh, the pleasure lake of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, a prestigious club which membership included famed entrepreneurs including Andrew Carneige and Henry Clay Frick.

In 1994, a group of citizens had a new vision for the valley. They created the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy, a community-based non-profit designed to make meaningful contributions to the preservation and restoration of the entire Kiski-Conemaugh River Valley. For over 20 years they have been developing trails, preserving land, monitoring watersheds, and educating the public on the importance of conservation. The Kiski-Conemaugh River Valley spans 1,887 square miles from Johnstown to Freeport, covering portions of Armstrong, Cambria, Indiana, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties. The valley not only boasts some of the state’s highest mountain ridges and deepest river gorges; it features an impressive collection of natural, cultural, and recreational resources.

The Sojourn was a hit!

Join Conemaugh Valley Conservancy in our mission to protect and restore the health and beauty of the Kiski-Conemaugh River Valley and to strengthen the connection between the land and it’s people. With your help, we’re breathing new life into forgotten railroads and neglected streams and rivers throughout South Western Pennsylvania. The staff of Conemaugh Valley Elementary Child Care continues the Cambria County County Child Development standard of excellence by providing children with both educational and physical programming. For example, this year the children will be learning about their surroundings, both indoors and outdoors, through a variety of hands-on projects. The staff of Conemaugh Valley work very hard to keep the children involved in activities with a child focused curriculum. Clara Barton, founder of The Red Cross, traveled to Johnstown to offer assistance by establishing tents as to help the injured and sick, beginning on June 2, 1889.

The establishment was moved to the 8th Ward, the current site of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. The hospital expanded into the Joseph Friedhoff Orchard in Hornerstown in a wooden building where it stayed until January 21, 1892. The Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital was born after The Red Cross turned over its field hospital facilities. On November 8, 1889, the land in the 8th Ward was officially purchased for $5,800. In 1892, the state-of-the-art hospital building was complete. The original hospital of Conemaugh Health System had 60 beds in one main building with two wings, and a physician parking lot.

On the morning of May 31, 1889, the Conemaugh River Gourge rose to 20 feet. Since midmorning, they'd worked to avoid this, because they feared the consequences. The lake was a little over two miles long, a little over a mile wide at its widest spot, and 60 feet deep at the dam itself. Conemaugh Health System was created after tragedy in the valley of Johnstown, PA. Founded in 1800 by Joseph Johns, Johnstown grew and thrived throughout the 19th century as a steel and coal powerhouse. The population grew as incoming European immigrants were drawn by economic opportunity. Rich culture and historic buildings in Johnstown were created by these individuals.
